A Christian Statement on the Future of One, Free, and Independent Korea

The Korean people have existed for thousands of years as one people group.

Before August 15, 1945 ("815”), when the Korean people were liberated from Japanese colonialism after being under its rule since November 17, 1905, the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) partitioned the Korean Peninsula along the 38th Parallel.

This division was a temporary measure, yet it remains to this day, dividing tens of millions of Korean family members, leading to the Korean War from June 25, 1950, to July 24, 1953, in which approximately 3 million Koreans died. The people in North Korea have suffered the most from this imposed division under the rule of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, and now Kim Jong Un.

Today, the people of North Korea live with no food security under a totalitarian regime that controls all aspects of their lives.

With God’s help, the global Christian community recognizes our duty to pray and labor for the reunification of one, free, and independent Korea. Let us pray for North Korea to turn away from darkness and embrace God's love, light, and truth in Jesus Christ.

Principles

  • Jesus Christ is “the way, the truth, and the life” and through whom “we must be saved” (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

  • As commanded by Jesus, we are to “love one another” (John 13:34).

  • Reconciliation and forgiveness are the hallmarks of Christianity (Matthew 6:14-15).

  • Only God can deliver Korea from its enemies and restore its national unity (Daniel 8:3-19 and Nehemiah 1:5-11).

  • Following Jesus, we proclaim the “good news to the poor,” “liberty to the captives,” “recovering of sight to the blind,” and “liberty to those who are oppressed” (Luke 18:18-19).

Actions

  • We pursue Korea’s reunification with urgency and humility and in collaboration with the global Body of Christ.

  • We seek repentance and reconciliation for God’s glory and the sake of the Korean people.

  • We anticipate revival, looking to God and the Holy Spirit's power, who alone can bring true national unity.

  • We commit to praying annually on the Sunday before August 15th with Christians worldwide for one, free, and independent Korea.

  • We work for the restoration and rebuilding of North Korea. We desire to see the rise of the “Jerusalem of the East” in Pyongyang, the current capital of North Korea.

Dedication

Our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, is our source and hope for unity. Through Him, we can lead Korea toward genuine reconciliation and a new beginning. Therefore, we dedicate ourselves to His teachings of forgiveness and love in our pursuit of one, free, and independent Korea. We pledge ourselves to the peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula and the greater glory of God.
